“One in a Thousand” is a true story of discovery. One summer day, three friends took off in their ultralight floatplanes. With no destination in mind, they turned left instead of right and followed a river that led them to a place they had no idea even existed.

Only 2 hours from Montreal, the 1000 Islands had once been the playground of industrialists, presidents and inventors but had somehow become forgotten by many. “One” is the story of Ian Coristine, one of those three pilots. Ian was stunned by the natural beauty and incredible history of the 1000 Islands and it changed his life. He bought a small island with a decrepit cottage and set about rebuilding it. One in a Thousand is a memoir reminiscent of The Olive Farm, A Year in Provence or Under the Tuscan Sun. It will be released on the Apple iPad App store on May 1st, 2012. In addition to the 100,000 word text, it will include hundreds of “retina display” high resolution aerial and landscape photographs embedded in the text, slideshows and galleries, narration, nature sounds and video, all set to unpublished instrumental tracks by the Great Lake Swimmers.

Ian Coristine has created and produced five highly regarded books on The Thousand Islands, all achieving “best selling” status and winning international awards for their quality. Almost twenty years ago, Ian took off in his Challenger ultralight for a short escape with a couple of friends and unknowingly began a journey that ultimately transformed his life. He discovered, by chance, a region just two hours west of his home near Hudson, Quebec: The Thousand Islands, an archipelago in the St. Lawrence River.

The region caught his imagination and touched something in him he couldn’t quite articulate or define. His interest became an obsession, and within a few years, he had purchased an island with an abandoned 100-year old cottage. Ian knew little about construction and less about boats; in One In A Thousand, Ian describes the hard work and comic misadventures of restoration and the difficult task of pulling his family onboard with his project.

Ian enlisted Donna Walsh Inglehart, author of Breaking the Ring (Little, Brown and Company) and Grindstone (Troubadour Interactive), to share in the writing of his memoir. When Donna read his original manuscript, she saw at once the possibility of something exciting and unique. The 100,000 word text is just one component of One In A Thousand. Ian’s memoir is rich with hundreds of his award-winning photographs and video clips and music created exclusively for this project by Great Lake Swimmers. From the outset, One was envisioned for and created solely as an iPad app, using its many capabilities to tell a rich and complex story.

Ian says “When the iPad emerged, I saw the potential to add video, audio, slideshows and music to bring the story to life in a much richer form than text and images alone. The challenge has been finding appropriate interactive eBook software and the people who know how to use it. After a long search I discovered Toronto’s McLellan Group (http://www.mclellangroup.com), who have all the necessary skills (storytelling, video, eBook, and web production) to create this in an innovative form similar to Al Gore’s Our Choice and we are now full speed ahead building it.”
